Early Cretaceous decapod Crustacea from the Neuquén Basin, west-central Argentina Naturalis
Aguirre-Urreta, Maria Beatriz.
Marine deposits of the Neuquén Basin of west-central Argentina (southern South America) are richly fossiliferous; its Mesozoic invertebrate faunas, represented mostly by molluscs, have been extensively studied since the nineteenth century. However, Early Cretaceous decapod crustaceans are far less known, although part of the systematic framework has been published (Aguirre-Urreta, 1989). The aim of the present note is to provide updated information based on ongoing research into the systematics and taphonomy of this crustacean group in the Neuquén Basin.

Eocene crabs (Crustacea, Brachyura) from Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles Naturalis
Collins, J.H.S.; Donovan, S.K..
Recently discovered crabs from the Middle to Upper Eocene of northern Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, include well-preserved carapaces of Montezumella rutteni Van Straelen, originally described from an incomplete holotype. The more comprehensive description of this species provided herein includes documentation of the first attributable left cheliped of Montezumella. From the same locality, Ocalina sublevis sp. nov. considerably extends the known geographic range of this genus. Both of these Tethyan decapod genera apparently migrated west from the Mediterranean region during the Eocene. Despite these new determinations, decapod crustaceans remain poorly known from the Eocene of the Antillean islands. Additionally, Callianassa pustulosa Withers from the...

Epibiont occurrence on gastropod shells used by the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Anomura: Diogenidae) on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ayres-Peres,Luciane; Mantelatto,Fernando L..
Gastropod shells occupied by hermit crabs are an important attachment substrate for epifauna, and these shells are often damaged. The present study aimed to characterize the epibionts and extent of damage for gastropod shells occupied by the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901). Samples were collected monthly over a period of one year (from July 2002 through June 2003), in the Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba regions, on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. The sampling was performed using a fishing boat equipped with double-rig nets. The shells were identified and weighed. Loxopagurus loxochelis occupied 14 gastropod shell species in Caraguatatuba and five in Ubatuba. In the two areas, approximately 55% of these gastropod shells bore epibionts,...

Espécies do gênero Munida Leach (Crustacea, Decapoda, Galatheidae), distribuídas na costa do Brasil Zoologia
Melo-Filho,Gustavo A.S. de; Melo,Gustavo A.S. de.
The purpose of this work is to analyse the taxonomy and distributional patterns of the species of the genus Munida Leach, 1820 which occur along the Brazilian coast. The species of Munida present some peculiar characteristics, rarely found in any other marine group. They live in groups with great number of individuals (gregariousness) and with several species found together in the same population (sintopy). In addition, they exhibit a great degree of intraspeciftc variation and, paradoxally, a little variability among the species. These factors make a better understanding of the systematics of this group very difficult. In the present study the utilization of non variable characters was emphasized. As a corollary of this study, "species-complexes" were...

Fécondité de Nephrops norvegicus dans le golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Conan, Gérard; Guenole, A.; Omnes, Marie-helene.
Females of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) incubate their eggs under the abdomen for a period of several months. The authors estimated the individual fecundity of N. norvegicus (1) before spawning, and (2) at the end of the incubation period. From these two relationships, they then calculated the average egg loss. Egg loss seems to be relatively higher for small females than for large ones. The mean egg loss estimated for the Bay of Biscay (45%) differs from the only other existing value (75%) calculated by other authors for Portuguese waters. Egg loss may regulate stock-density, and may be a mechanism intervening in stock-recruitment.

Fossils and decapod phylogeny Naturalis
Schram, Frederick R.; Dixon, Christopher.
An expanded series of morphological characters developed for a cladistic analysis of extant decapods has yielded a new hypothesis for the phylogeny of the group. Application of this database to selected fossil genera produces some interesting results and demonstrates the feasibility of treating fossils as full and equal partners in the study of decapod phylogenetic relationships. In addition, it seems clear that rigorous cladistic methods can be used to evaluate the phylogenetic positions of fossils, rather than ad hoc speculation.
